Books & Beans

Books & Beans is a conceptual branding project for a book café based in Seattle.

Overview:
This café serves as cozy retreat from the rain, the blurred light of its neon sign acting as a beacon to overworked and undercaffeinated college students. Conveniently located on campus, Books & Beans stays open late on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to accommodate the busy life of college students and teachers alike!

Branding

Dreamy pop filtered through the speakers as dappled light streamed through the large bay window of the busy shop.

Process:
I wanted the overall vibe of the brand to be relaxed and friendly, so I mixed warm and cool colors to create a muted, calm palette. These colors gave me a quite a few options when it came to styling!

For the logo, I went with a bold, almost retro font because it felt friendly and cool without the boldness feeling oppressive. I did remove some of the little flourishes of the original font and in the end (Version 3), I think it made the logo more cohesive.

For the pattern, I simplified the mug on the logo so that when placed in the background, it would look less busy. From there, it was just a matter of finding suitable mockups and voilà! - a brand was born.
